open source usenet server for RH

Hi, I am thinking of setting up a NNTP server on my linode for my own newsgroups. What should I do? I hope the newsgroup will be available for my friends but not available to the public. Is it possible? What NNTP servers are available?

Thanks!

I just found this news server at http://www.leafnode.org but it seems the current version doesn't support local newsgroups. I am not sure what is the meaning of "local newsgroups", but what I am looking for is a small server that serve about 10 readers, and I will create my own newsgroups. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Try this google search …. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=U … gle+Search">http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=free+nntp+server+linux&btnG=Google+Search

INN is free, at least. If you're running Fedora, a "yum install inn" should get you started. Beyond that, you're on your own - I once ran leafnode at home, but I've never set up INN.

I used leafnode before. Leafnode is more useful (and easier to set up) if you are using a personal news server. It downloads the newsgroup list, but only downloads new artcles for actively read newsgroups that your news reader polls. So if you don't want all of the groups this is a good choice. Inn is a more robust and powerful news server, for those time when you want more than just a personal news server. I tried to set Inn up once, but got confused.
