Can't install phpMyAdmin

Hi

I am trying to install phpMyAdmin to manage a database I have. The database etc. is fully working command-line wise.

$ sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 phpmyadmin : Depends: php5-mcrypt but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

is the output I get

$ sudo apt-get install php5-mcrypt
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree

I tried that next.

The server runs Ubuntu 12.04. I am fairly new when it comes to Linux, I have a bit of experience, not much.

How would I get to install phpMyAdmin?

Instead of asking "how" you should be asking "why".

Phpmyadmin is a well known security sieve, best left with all the Godaddy training wheel hosts and not a VPS service.

Search the forum, this topic has been hashed over numerous times, all saying the same thing (i.e. "avoid like a bad rash").

Have you done anything to your base 12.04 install that might cause this issue? For example, did you upgrade your PHP to a later version?
