Help with Wordpress

Hello,

I am hoping that someone can help me solve this probably very easy problem. I have already looked on the internet for the solution, but perhaps my mind is not tech savvy enough at this stage to comprehend. :)

I have Debian 6.0 with Apache, Mysql and Php installed.

I set up Wordpress on two domains and everything is working fine there. Also went through the security checks to harden wordpress.

My problem is, giving Wordpress permission to access images that I upload to the uploads folder. Right now the folders have the standard permissions 755 and 644, etc. So in other words, the folders are okay. I even uploaded the images myself but wordpress cannot find them when I look in the Media Library. When I try to insert an image in wordpress it says:

“xyz.jpg” has failed to upload due to an error

Unable to create directory wp-content/uploads/2012/09. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

Is there something that I am missing? I would greatly appreciate a nudge into the right direction.

Thank you for your time in advance.

Jasmin

P.S. I have no problems uploading themes or plugins. These all work fine. Can even access the themes via Wordpress. And upgrading Wordpress was also no problem (all done manually via shell). So I am at a loss as to what the problem is. Appreciate any help.
