Private DNS

I am running ubuntu on a few linode's (web, db, cache) and I was wondering the best way to reference each other?

Do people set names & ips in the /etc/hosts or setup internal DNS records?

Any reason not to use normal public DNS records?

If I'm using the internal network I don't use hostnames I stick with the private IPs they don't change very often.

If I'm using external addresses then I just use linode's public dns servers.
