[Resolved] Java web apps (JIRA, Confluence, ...) on Linode?

Hello,

I am currently using a VPS based on OpenVZ and I've run into problems when running my JIRA and Confluence instances on it, as the Java processes take up a lot of memory (even with Xms/Xmx set to reasonable values). Apparently, this is a common problem with Java on OpenVZ, and the solution I've most often read was to switch to a Xen based VPS.

Long story short, I'm considering switching to Linode, but I would be grateful to have some information first as to whether I will be able to run these applications (or any other JVM applications for that matter) on a Linode.

I'm thinking about a 1024 which should be more than enough for JIRA and Confluence. We're talking about rather small JIRA/Confluence installations that are only used by myself, mostly to manage my school homework. ;)

Any advise on this would be much appreciated.

Id get a 512, and just tune it right.

If all your using is for light personal use, i think a 1024 would be overkill…

I have a 512 that runs a tomcat stack, apache, php, mysql, proftpd, postfix and courier{imap, pop} and ive never had memory issues.

and you can upgrade quite easily with only a few minutes of outage later on if you find you do need the resources

Thanks a lot for your input, it is much appreciated. Good point on using a smaller Linode and upgrade if needed. I'll read up on what the minimum requirements for JIRA and Confluence are.

Thanks again!
