awstats versus google analytics and how to monitor web logs

Still learning how to set up and manage a LEMP but soon I will move some websites form shared hosting to self hosting.

I was wondering, when you use Google Analytics is there any use for spending time on installing (and learning) awstats and spending CPU on it?

However, I would like to have a tool to analyze the log files of my sites to spot any hack attempts. For starters it doesn't really matter when it is in real time or a daily cron job. Neither does it matter, again for starters, if it would run it remotely on the server or if I would have to download the logfiles to my desktop.
