My Linode VPS has been upgraded to Linode Cloud...

It probably helps with marketing, because "cloud" is a buzzword nowadays. Even the great Linode can't keep making a profit without marketing 8)

I have no problem with the marketing, I know that cloud is now a cool word but what does it means?

It seems that everything that uses a "service on the internet" is a cloud service.

it seems that every non-technical people knows what is a cloud, I'm not so technical but I know how to manage a VPS and write some software and I don't know what is a cloud.

Disclaimer: I am a cloud mechanic.

The explanation for "Cloud" that I heard was that it is something of an internet RAID that makes having a physical storage device optional – everybody's data is stored online across every storage device connected to the Cloud and is protected with some kind of encryption. If someone has a spare storage device, they can add it to the cloud. Not my idea of security or personal control :-)

The term VPS is really no different than VPN. 'Virtual Private Server' and 'Virtual Private Network'.Both are virtual and private and can be done with whatever the owner wants. No technicality needed, except the initial setup and security, and an occaisional update to take advantage of security updates (the updating part isn't really that technical IMO once you're used to it, and the initial setup is (mostly) easy with help).

To me the closest thing to a cloud would be what uses a utility computing model for billing and for technical implementation.

Amazon bills by usage but you still manage "instances" although S3 might fit.

I think two examples of cloud for sure would be the venerable old shared hosting. You upload HTML files to an address and it might be one machine or a cluster or clusters of clusters.

The other would be Google's App Engine.

I like running my own VPS because it lets me choose what to install and how to administer it. I'm not interested in cloud and I'm most definitely not interested in being nickeled and dimed to death by a variable utility computing model.

The terms (VPS, VPN, Cloud) aren't really technical, they just describe a certain type of service. Setting them up (at least as far as VPS goes) is somewhat technical, but not so techical we can't figure them out, even if we need a bit of help.
