yum installs both i386 and x86_64?

I find this strange, but yum will always install both Archs. Wouldn't it recognize I'm using 64 bit? I'm very new to this, but couldn't find this information in the documentation. Thank you

If it bugs you, see #22:

22. I installed the x86_64 version, so why do I have i386 packages, and can I get rid of them?
