Suggestions for good VPS services in Canada/Australia/NZ
They need to support Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick).
Any one got suggestions of companies to try? or to avoid?
TIA
Rachel
P.S. In case anyone feels like flaming me with a "you shouldn't be asking this in a Linode forum", it was Linode Support who suggested I ask here, since this isn't something they can provide for me.

The only company I can think of off the top of my head that meets requirements "Definitely Canada" and "Something Regarding Virtualization" would be
obs: It's not the technology, it's the connectivity. FedEx ships to New Zealand too, I'm sure, but most major backbones don't
Yes, I do need a host in the actual country - let me explain why.
I'm about to extend my ebook search site
One bookstore I include gives me a datafeed which covers these countries but I don't trust the prices in it; so I have a script which checks. And that script needs to run in the country else it'll get shown the prices for the wrong country.

Hmmm. Good news is that you should be able to get by with cheap OpenVZ instances or even shared hosting accounts, which are a dime a dozen in many places (or perhaps a dozen dimes per instance-month). This opens up your options quite a bit, especially in places like New Zealand.
With ssh access, you could use something like fabric to gather data in bulk (oversimplified example follows):
def gather_prices():
result = run("curl http://www.example.com/books/about/llamas/llamas-are-luscious.buy")
price = frobulate(result)
sqlquery("INSERT INTO prices...")
Then "fab -H canada,newzealand,australia gather_prices" to run that on each of the targets.
thanks!

In NZ it's both, the weaker currency makes technology expensive and shipping is god damn insane (especially shipping out of NZ since they don't have surface mail).
However it is the most relaxed place I've ever lived, no one's in a rush for you to fix a bug at 3am in the morning on Sunday, they're happy to wait till Monday at 9am, that makes it worth it!
They're primarily a DSL wholesaler, and they're pretty on the ball. Their hardware is colocated at 151 Front in Toronto.
Another is Canaca/Zazeen. They're the reverse, a hosting provider that started an ISP to take advantage of all the idle downstream bandwidth. Their prices are higher, and their reputation for customer service isn't as good as Caneris. They're hosted in Mississauga, and backhaul through their own fibre to 151 Front, where they hook up to the net.
Actually, this raises a good point; you don't actually need a VPS, since you just want a geolocated IP in Canada, you just need a VPN. Zazeen's $5/mth VPN would probably suffice for your needs, since you're not doing any hosting from there.
There are a bunch of other VPS providers in Canada, most of them are hosted at 151 Front in Toronto, iWeb in Montreal, etc.
I would like to suggest AJKservers. They have some nice vps deals
I deal with this junk on a forum I moderate on a daily basis. Invariably if someone has a valid question and some schmuck has a "product" to sell, they troll across the forum, join and post.
Seeing as how wAJdan started his company in sept of 2010, he's probably readily trolling around any and all VPS forums he can find to market his services as AJkse….
