Email not being delivered

I'm using google for email, so in my DNS Manager I have all the required config for that. I have a default install of sendmail (just apt-get install sendmail). The sendmail path is correct in my php.ini. Emails are not being delivered. I don't know where to start.

Check /var/log/mail.log

Where are the emails coming from? If they are generated by php, is your box aware that it isn't handling mail the domains it hosts?

I couldn't find anything indicating delivery failures in the log. I'm not sure what else I would need to do to configure sendmail. I tried setting up msmtp but I can't get it to cooperate - throws cert errors even with the correct cert. Things just aren't going well with this server :)
