Upgrading & Extras

Im currently with the worst VPS provider ever and well i didnt look into the company before parting with my money and well now im thinking about moving to Linode with in the next few days due to having 5 hours down time in the first week, But first i have a few questions

If i bought a Lino 360 to begin with would it be possible to upgrade to Lino 540 as and when i needed extra ram and bandwidth?

Also can you buy extra hard disk space / bandwidth from the control panel, And if so how much and would it be added instantly?

Also regarding the firewall on the machine would there be any restrictions like only being able to use a certain range of ports or are all ports open to be used with IP tables and so on?

Thanks in advance,

Key

P.S the community seems very well made, Hopefully Linode will have another customer very shortly!

If only there was a section on Linode's website to answer questions that get asked time and time and time again.

Maybe they could nickname it TATATAQ's or something catchy like that.

Yes. Caveat: moving between datacenters means changing IP addresses.

Yes. Disk $2/GiB/month. Bandwidth $10/100GiB/month. Usually better value to upgrade your whole Linode. Changes are instant.

Firewall is under your control (you have to install/configure it). Only the Atlanta datacenter blocks any ports. List here.

Yup!

Yes: RAM is $5/90MB/month, storage is $2/GB/month, bandwidth is $10/100GB/month. You usually come out ahead doing a full-fledged upgrade, but the extras can be handy if you just need some extra disk space for some maintenance or whatnot. Extras are added immediately, but RAM adjustments require a reboot and you can't resize active images.

Everything is wide open on Linode's end, and closing it up (if desired) is your responsibility. Upstream of the Atlanta datacenter there is some port filtering, but that usually doesn't impact customers outside of some very specific situations. That's it, though.

EDIT: Dang it, Peter, you stole my thunder.

Slightly off topic, but it's interesting that disk is rated in GiB, given that the drives themselves don't tend to get measured that way. Memory is a given, and I guess network is a toss-up (the actual communications links are more likely to be base-10, but you can count actual transfer however you want). Maybe its just more consistent, and it's not like things have to divide equally given room for extras and the host itself.
