feedback on tool idea wanted -- any volunteers?

Hey folks,

I'm trying to get some feedback on a sysadmin configurations management tool that I'm thinking about building. It looks like a lot of work so I'd like to establish first of all that there's a potential market for this thing before I spend the all my free time in the next six months of my life with my nose to the grindstone.

What I have in mind is I will show you the prototype (looks like was drawn by a five year old) of what I have in mind.

You will tell me if you would use this, if you would pay for it, and how much.

Any volunteers, chat me or post on this thread. Thanks! :)

Besides that, i think you should post a brief info, feature list (that you planned) and also screenshots of the prototype (if any). In addition, you can also compare your product with other competitors (both free and paid ones) After that, people want to try it pay it or not.

Good luck

This assumes our estimates would be accurate. If you canvass the market for these tools you might also get a good estimate.

On the surface your request looks to me like: you guys do the market canvassing and estimating for me without pay, and if I decide to make this I'll then charge you. If that is how other people also perceive your request, you might not get many volunteers.

The 2 reasons I didn't post prototype scribbles is

1) I am still working on them.

2) I would rather not share in a public forum. Not paranoid or anything, not asking for ndas, but some discretion seems advisable.

I am not asking volunteers to do market research for me, just, would this tool be useful to them. Of course, if they happen to know of competing tools that I may not know about, that would be great. I am still learning the space.

The tool will be a nice front end to puppet.

I would be willing to pay $5 for feedback from experienced sysadmins.
