Question regarding user authentication via key pair

Hi folks, can anyone tell me if it's possible to do user authentication for WebDAV (on Apache or better yet, lighty) with key pairs? I've done some Google searching around, but I'm not sure what terms to search for and I'm finding a LOT of really old information (2003, etc.)

I am hoping to be able to do key-based authentication much like you can do with SSH, for WebDAV.

So if anyone knows if this can be done, please let me know and hopefully point me in the right direction.
