Reset Root Password on Linode

Linode Staff

Recently, I have had trouble logging in to one of my Linodes, and I am wanting to reset the root password. Can I reset the root password on my Linode?

Hello,

There are two different ways you can reset your root password, and they are both outlined in this guide.

However, here are the step:
Click the Linodes tab in the Linode Manager.
Select a Linode to pull up its Dashboard.
Click Shut down to turn off your Linode. Monitor the Host Job Queue for a message indicating that your Linode has shut down.
Click the Rescue tab.
Select your primary disk from the Filesystem menu.
Enter a new password for the root user in the New Password field.
Click Reset Root Password. The Linode’s dashboard appears.
Click Boot to turn on your Linode.

If you need to accomplish this in the New Cloud Manager the steps would be as follows:

  1. Power off your Linode
  2. Go to your Linode's Settings tab
  3. Under Settings, click on Reset Root Password to expand that panel
  4. Select your primary disk from the Disk dropdown menu
  5. Enter a new password for the root user in the Password field
  6. Click Save
  7. Return to the Linode’s Summary tab
  8. Power on your Linode
