The intricacies of updating your Linode's operating system will ultimately depend on what distribution you currently have installed. Can you provide any more insight into what's installed on your Linode or what steps you have taken to update your system?
In general, I would strongly encourage you to either/both enable Backups and initiate a Manual Snapshot or take alternate steps to backup your data before proceeding. Additionally, depending on the age of your system or how well you've previously kept up with system updates, it may simply be easier to perform a "Clean Installation" before copying data from the original system and swapping IP addresses.
We make this recommendation because an "inline upgraded" system is not the same as a fresh/clean installation. Clean installations are a known quantity released by the upstream developers; Inline Upgrades require patches to bring an existing system as close to that image as possible. Previous modifications to your system's kernel and/or drivers can impact how it behaves following that upgrade, sometimes in unpredictable ways depending what's been changed.
