How do I improve download speeds?

When I test the downlaod speeds from my Linode instance at Dallas (https://speedtest.dallas.linode.com/) I get about 10mbps,but when I set up a HTTP server and download a file from the browser, I only get about 500kbps, why is this. Is there a way I can improve the download speeds?

Performing a test download from our Speedtest servers generally will differ from actual observed download of tangible files from an HTTP server. Limiting factors could include internal configurations that limit session throughput, resource capabilities of the server, and/or the stability of your ISP.
