Do corporate VPN block linode access?

I am noticing that none of my linode-hosted websites can be accessed when I attempt to connect through my employer's corporate VPN? I am getting the browser error:
ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED

Is this a standard industry practice? I noticed that there are no problems reaching a web server proxied through cloudflare?

I also tested with a linode server I found online:
https://spaceweather.com

and I cannot access their server until I logoff the VPN?

If this is a widespread industry practice, I may need to proxy all of my sites through cloudflare.

This issue could be caused by a number of different potential things, but to answer your question as to whether or not this is "a standard industry practice," the answer would be "no."

While I cannot know for certain, you mentioned that you:

  • Cannot access the linode-hosted websites from your work VPN
  • Can access the same sites (presumably) on the same computer/web browser while not logged into your VPN
  • Tested other Linode-hosted websites on the VPN and still could not access them.

Since all these issues exist only when connected to your work VPN, the issue is most likely stemming from either a configuration with the VPN itself, or a work-related firewall policy.

While I cannot provide definitive directions for what a fix might look like in your situation, I would start by reaching out to your workplace's system administrator, or whoever is responsible for the implementation of firewall and VPN configurations at your organization and provide the information I shared, and ask for what configurations on your corporate VPN or firewall may be causing the issue you are experiencing. It is probably something as simple as an IP block being blocklisted.

I hope that helps!
