SFTP access very slow or not connecting at all

I upgraded my debian linux server yesterday.
Since doing that access to my server via SFTP takes a long time to authenticate if at all.
SSH does authenticate most of the time. It is slow to authenticate, but works.
Everything was fine until yesterday.

I have restored my backup from Sunday (three days ago) and I am still experiencing the same problem.
So it seems that the issue has nothing to do with my upgrade!
But I would dearly like to resolve this issue as I can barely use my SFTP upload of new content.
