Block Storage + Linode

Hello,

Our client wants to get a linode with extra volume as they make 3d tours and its heavy in size. The following is what we shortlisted -

Linode 4GB, $24.00/mo, 4 GB, 2 CPUs, 80 GB Storage, 4 TB Transfer.

Now if we go for 50gb extra block storage it says $5, so with that extra 50gb, will the whole volume be 130GB, and we can keep adding as we need? Or will it be a separate storage and we need to upload data to that storage separately?

When you add 50GB of extra Block Storage to your Linode instance, it indeed creates a separate storage volume. This volume doesn't expand the root compute disk of your Linode. Instead, it's like attaching an additional drive to your Linux system. This means that it doesn't automatically increase the size of the root compute disk, which in your case is 80GB.

So, with the additional 50GB Block Storage, you will have two separate volumes: the original 80GB compute disk that's part of your Linode 4GB plan and the newly added 50GB Block Storage volume. You can use this extra Block Storage volume for storing data, such as the heavy 3D tours, separately from your system disk. The primary benefits of using Block Storage for such a use case is that it's easily scalable and cost efficient.

Should you need more storage in the future, you have a few options:

  1. Resize your Linode
  2. Scale your existing Block Storage volume larger
  3. Add additional Block Storage volumes
