At this time, Linode does not offer the service of downsizing a Block Storage Volume. Currently, the best solution for scaling down a Block Storage Volume size is laid out as an answer in this Community Question Post. Below I offer a bullet-pointed list of the step to take to achieve a smaller Block storage Volume:

  • You will need to Create A New Block Storage Volume to the desired smaller size
  • Once created, Attach the smaller Volume to the Linode that currently has the larger Volume attached
  • You can then use rsync or cp, to move the data from the larger Volume to the smaller one
  • Once you have moved over all the data, you can Delete the bigger Volume
