What is the cost for hosting a Mastodon service?
What is the rough min/max/average monthly cost to run a Mastodon instance:
- 100 users, 50 active at any time.
- Anyone might send an image or two.
I apologize if the above metrics is not adequate. I'm trying to get ahead of what I don't know before I do anything.
Thank you.

When building out a Mastodon server on Linode using the marketplace app, you would choose the Linode Plan for the CPU size that you would want to use, and the pricing would be based around that.
Costs
- You'll need a domain name, so average in that cost of $20 let's say.
- Linode Plan $30 and up
- Any Network Transfer usage cost over the provided Network In/Out listed on the pricing guide at $0.01/GB.
You can always start out with a smaller plan and can always upgrade the plan if you need more performance. Though I would suggest sticking with a Dedicated Plan, as you’re going to want all that CPU available to you.
Here is the Guides - Deploy Mastodon through the Linode Marketplace if you need it.

The cost for hosting a Mastodon service can vary depending on several factors such as the number of users, server resources, and the hosting provider.
Here are some of the costs to consider:
Server hosting: You will need a server to host your Mastodon instance. You can choose to host the server yourself or use a hosting provider. Hosting providers typically charge a monthly fee, and the cost can range from $5 per month for a basic virtual private server (VPS) to hundreds or even thousands of dollars per month for a dedicated server with more resources.
