How do I set my Linode to send outbound requests over a specific IP protocol (IPv4 or IPv6)?

To make outbound requests default to either IPv4 or IPv6, you can edit /etc/gai.conf. I found a couple of posts which discuss how to do this on CentOS and Ubuntu systems:
