How do I resolve unable to establish data base connection?

I have two wordpress websites on a linode server. Both went down today with the 503 "unable to establish a data base connection". No changes have been made to either site recently and from what I can see in the linode dashboard, cpu and disk usage shot up massively about two hours ago and remains high. How do I get it back down and get these sites live again?

Might be automated bots/hackers trying to brute force into your site which is causing a spike in traffic, CPU, etc usage. Hence causing your database connection to get knocked offline.

You could install a plug-in called Hide Login which allows you to change the default url.
