create a system image
I would like to image a system before I perform a software upgrade

There's a few options for backing up your data prior to an upgrade. We do have an images system, but it's intended for 'gold master' style images that will be deployed to other new Linodes, and has a per-image limit of 2GB. There's more info on it here.
If you want a single, full backup of your Linode I'd recommend either copying the disk over SSH or using our Clone tool to copy the disks and configuration profile to a new Linode.
If you choose to clone your Linode to a new Linode in the same datacenter, and would like to use the clone instead of your current Linode, you can use our IP Swap tool in the Remote Access tab of the Linode's dashboard to exchange the IP addresses between the two Linodes.
For regular, on-site backups of your Linode I'd recommend our Backup Service. It will take a backup of your Linode every day, week, and two weeks that you can restore to your Linode, or a new Linode, when needed.
