When will new distribution images become available?

Ubuntu 20.04 was just released today. It would be unreasonable to expect Linode to already have an image fully tested and ready to go for new Linodes immediately. But how long generally should we expect to wait before it, or any other major distribution release, becomes available as an option for new nodes? What is the best way to get notified of when new distribution versions become available on Linode?

Linode recently published a brilliant insider article on how they get distribution images out within hours of the official release.

The best place I’ve found is to follow them on Twitter.

With Ubuntu 20.04, Linode tweeted to say it was now available within an hour of me receiving the official release email from Canonical.

Although I will point out, this is only applicable when you are rebuilding an existing Linode, or building a new one.

If you’re already running an earlier release, you could clone the Linode and run a standard system upgrade to the new release as soon as it’s available.
