WinSCP Slow Transfer Speeds

Linode Staff

I am getting slow transfer speeds when using WinSCP to move files. Is there a faster way to transfer files to my Linode?

The default protocol that WinSCP uses is SFTP. While SFTP is more robust and has a greater functionality than SCP, it is typically slower at transferring files. If you aren’t using the additional features of SFTP, then you should change the protocol that WinSCP uses in the Login Dialog and switch to SCP for faster transfer speeds.

Take a look at the Protocols Documentation Page for a list of protocols that WinSCP uses as well as what features each protocol supports.

If you would like more information on the difference between SFTP and SCP, the article that I’ve linked has a good breakdown.
