Can My Domain Have A CNAME Record Share Hostnames with Other Records?

Linode Staff

I notice that when I do this, my domain displays with a red ring around it in the Cloud Manager, indicating an error.

While it's currently possible to configure a domain in the DNS Manager where a CNAME record will have the same hostname as another record, of any type, this is actually invalid according to the rules of DNS as laid out in RFC-1034.

The domain system provides such a feature using the canonical name
(CNAME) RR. A CNAME RR identifies its owner name as an alias, and
specifies the corresponding canonical name in the RDATA section of the
RR. If a CNAME RR is present at a node, no other data should be
present; this ensures that the data for a canonical name and its aliases
cannot be different.

As such, it will be necessary to change the value in the Hostname field for any conflicting records. Hope this helps!
