Host 40

I've just signed up with Linode and have been allocated to host 40, which I notice has suffered a kernel panic 8 times in the last 3 months. This frequency of unscheduled reboots (it works out at about once every 11 days on average) would unfortunately be too disruptive to the services I am hoping to run.

Do you have any plans to resolve the problem, and if so when will that happen?

Thanks in advance.

The problem only exists with a particular revision of the Intel Pentium 4 processor and many Linode hosts have other revisions of the Pentium 4 that do not have this kernel panic issue. Depending on the availability of slots, you may be able to request that your linode be put on a host machine which does not have this problem.

The exact cause of the kernel panic is unknown, but engineers at Intel who work with Linux kernel developers have known of the problem and have been trying to figure it out for several months. In the meantime, Linode is exploring options for replacing the effected CPUs with known-good revisions, or outright replacing those host machines.

I've been keeping track of this and Host 40 has actually gone away 9 times in the past 2 months. It's not always posted in the forum. Here are the dates:

Jan 11, 12, 25, 30

Feb 9, 12, 19, 20, 28
