Make a copy of a disk

I used to be able to make a copy of a disk before upgrading critical software, and in case of any errors, I could instantly mount the copy of the disk instead of the one with the upgrade error. Has this option disappeared with the new dashboard, and is there really no other option in such cases than performing a full backup of all disks and making a full restore in case of errors?

You can still add a new disk to your Linode in the new Linode Manager. From your Linode's dashboard go to Settings, then to Advanced Configurations and you can add a disk, a configuration profile, or edit any of your current disks or configuration profiles.

Once you have a new disk you can copy your current disk over with 'dd' while your Linode's booted into Rescue Mode or copy individual files with 'rsync'.

Okay, thanks. It was nice to be able to do it from the control panel without having to boot in rescue and copying manually, though. Any particular reason why you decide to remove that functionality, or do you intend to reinstate it?

I'm not sure which method you were using before to copy your Linode's disk. Are you referring to cloning a Linode? You can Clone your current Linode to a new Linode in the new Linode Manager. From Create a Linode you can select Clone from Existing and copy your current Linode's disks to another Linode. That way you can immediately boot from the other Linode and swap IP addresses if needed. From the Networking tab for a Linode, scroll down to IP Transfer to exchange the two IP addresses between Linodes in the same datacenter.

Instead of just being able to rename or resize the individual disk, it was also possible to make a copy of an individual disk to the same Linode, without having to clone the entire Linode.

I don't know if this is the idea behind the "Imagize (disk)" function, which I hadn't thought of before, but each time I try to use it on a disk, I get an "Image creation failed" within a few minutes, even though there should be plenty of free space on the Linode.

Best wishes,
Thomas

I have some disks that were previously copied with the Linode Manager, which I've also done just prior to an upgrade, exactly for the reasons you listed.

But, I can't find that option anymore. I saw the Image option, but that says it only works for images less than 2GB?

To anyone who needs this function of "Copy" a disk, please note that it has been renamed to "Clone".

A little tricky thing is, a profile is selected by default in "Configuration Profiles" and this makes "Disks" and "Destination" unavailable.

Untick the selected configuration profile first, you will then be able to select the disk you want to copy in "Disks", and select the same Linode in "Destination", and "Clone" it. The copied disk will then be shown in "Disks". It is exactly same as the function "Copy" as before.

This is a good-to-know feature I have never found before. However,

A little tricky thing is, a profile is selected by default in "Configuration Profiles" and this makes "Disks" and "Destination" unavailable.

I don't see this.

If I click Clone in the configuration profile "…" menu, the configuration profile is selected by default.

If I click Clone on the disk's "…" menu, the disk that I clicked Clone on is selected by default.
