Create new linode from clone or from backup

I want to create a new linode that is a copy of an existing linode for testing. I'm using the new manager interface. I'm assuming the existing linode needs to be shut down during the clone if that is the method used. Any downside/problems with creating from the backup? Any advice?

-Thanks.

You can either clone a Linode or restore a Linode from a backup to a new Linode. With the clone process it can be done while the Linode's running, but may result in an incomplete copy if new data is added during the clone process.

Restoring from backups will not affect the original Linode, and can be done while the original Linode is booted or shut down. However, the backup will be exactly as the Linode was at that point in time, so there may be differences between when the backup was taken and now. To limit any differences you could take a Snapshot Backup of your Linode right before you restore it.
