Hey there,

If the large spikes in internet traffic are expected and it is slowing down your Linode which is common, or if you have videos on your Linode. You have a couple of options. First is you can resize your Linode to the next size up or add another Linode and use NodeBalancer to balance out your traffic.

To resize your Linode you would need to follow the resizing your Linode guide. Then make sure to resize the hard disk since this is not automatically done when resizing your Linode. This is the easiest method to add more resources.

Your second option is to create a second Linode and use our NodeBalancer to balance the traffic for you. Our NodeBalancer can handle up to 10,000 connections at a time and has the added benefit that if one Linode goes down the others will still be able to serve requests. While this may be more complicated to setup, this ensures high availability.

If you are not seeing the number of requests increase or don't host videos. This could be due to your Linode being compromised. Your Linode could be sending large amounts of data out or be part of a DDOS attack. If your feel that your Linode is compromised we reccomend that you scan with an antivirus. We have a guide for ClamAV that can help you install and run the antivirus.
