Can I reserve an IP?

In some cases I need to distribute an IP to a hard-to-change place controlled by a 3rd party. Is there any way currently to reserve a public IP, such that it would never be released from my account if the Linode using it needed to be recreated? I could make due with something more rudimentary than a full floating IP feature. Is the intention that NodeBalancers will be Linode's way to serve this need?

As long as the IP address is assigned to a Linode, it'll never be released. You can swap IPs between Linodes from the Manager. So you could have a $5 Linode holding onto that IP forever.
