Backup options

Disclaimer: I love Linode. The service is reliable. The rates are great. And the support is great! I really couldn't be happier and will never go back to a "managed" web host again.

But storage space is expensive. Especially if you want to use your Linode as a remote backup solution. So I checked out LiveVault and they quoted me a price of $2,000/year/server for 5 gigs per server! Now I know they have lots of great features, but for that price I'll stick with tapes!

I was just wondering if anyone else used a remote backup solution they were pleased with. Or does anyone swear by a more traditional method (e.g. tape)?

I've been using the backup service at http://tranxactglobal.com/ for the last few months. Costs $5 per month for 10 GB of storage. It works well for me.

Correction: Turns out storage space at Linode.com isn't expensive! After looking at multiple remote online storage sites, they make $5/mo./gig look like a giveaway!

I'd say $10-$20/mo./gig is about average.

Tranxactglobal is definately cheaper, but they look like a really small player.

I back up my home server onto my Linode, and my Linode onto my home server, nightly. Each machine thus has a complete copy of the other, so if either goes down, I can recover the other. I use rsync to do this. For the amount of data that I add to my home server and Linode per day, this amounts to only a couple of megabytes transfer in each direction every night. You can find my rsync backup script in a post on these boards if you look …
