local dns issues across nodes

Has anyone else experienced problems with dns resolution across nodes?

I am gettign the following error from a Ruby on Rails applications connection pool:

PG::Error: could not translate host name "somenode1.local.somedomain.com" to address: Temporary failure in name resolution
