The following packages have been kept back:

libldb1 libsmbclient python-ldb python-samba samba-common samba-common-bin

samba-libs smbclient

Hello, I"m on Linode's flavor of Ubuntu 14.04. For the Last couple months I've been seeing that their were security updates available for this server but they have been held back. In the past I've found that a future updates comes along that the kept back packages which are stalled then get installed when I 'apt-get upgrade'.

These have been hanging for months now. I don't (directly) use samba functionality so it's not blocking any work on the server it's just getting a little irritating. I'm starting to resign myself to looking at these messages until I upgrade to 16.0.4.

Any ideas? Many thanks in advance.

This is usually a dependency issue of some nature that the upgrade process is not comfortable with.

First try: sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Frequently you can install the packages individually to resolve the issues.

sudo apt-get install libldb1 libsmbclient python-ldb python-samba samba-common samba-common-bin samba-libs smbclient

dist-upgrade

dist-upgrade in addition to performing the function of upgrade,

also intelligently handles changing dependencies with new versions

of packages; apt-get has a "smart" conflict resolution system, and

it will attempt to upgrade the most important packages at the

expense of less important ones if necessary. So, dist-upgrade

command may remove some packages. The /etc/apt/sources.list file

contains a list of locations from which to retrieve desired package

files. See also apt_preferences(5) for a mechanism for overriding

the general settings for individual packages.

Yes! dist-upgrade appears to have worked! Thank you so much for taking the time to respond.

Best Regards,

Peter
