Intermittent Connectivity Loss

We are running a LAMP server using ubuntu 10.04. The server is mainly an email server plus it renders a few websites. A while ago the server began having connectivity issues. Intermittently, and usually lasting for only a few minutes, the server will lose all external connectivity. All the linode graphs will go to zero during the lost connectivity time and there is nothing remarkable on any of the graphs before the connectivity loss. We can access the server during this time via the Ajax console. Usually, by the time we investigate the issue it has resolved itself so debugging this has been challenging. To eliminate hardware possibilities we asked Linode to move the server to different hardware but that too did not help.

So just wondering if anyone else has seen this and if so what was the cause and resolution.

I'd start here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

The above link just reinforces the fact that ubuntu 10.04 is no longer supported. Support stopped in April 2015 and this problem started in Sept 2015. In addition we run 2 other ubuntu 10.04 servers at linode and they do not have this problem which leads me to believe it's not related to no longer being supported. We have plans to go to Ubuntu 16.04 once it is released but in the meantime wanted to know if anybody else has seen this problem and if so what they did about it.
