CentOS 4.0 now available

Mar 14, 2005
by Christopher Aker
CentOS 4.0 now available through the Distro Wizard. “udev” is installed, but won’t run on startup. To enable (if you know what you’re doing), grep for “udev” in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit and uncomment the line. It’s likely that this package can just be removed completely. I also disabled bdb in /etc/my.cnf, which is needed since it […]

Retrieve Your Log in Information

Nov 14, 2004
by Christopher Aker
I’ve deploy a new feature that enables you to retrieve a lost username or lost password. To reset a lost account password, you’ll need the username and any payment or invoice ID (which are located on the emails you receive each month or during signup). This will NOT work for accounts until they are activated… […]

CentOS WORLD-WRITABLE /etc/shadow file

Oct 4, 2004
by Christopher Aker
The CentOS images (both the old and the recently updated version) have a world-writable /etc/shadow file. This image was in fact built from scratch and was not online at any point. I can only account this towards a mis-configuration of some kind when I built the image. If you’ve deployed CentOS, please perform this as […]

Fedora updated to Fedora Core 2 (FC2)

Sep 14, 2004
by Christopher Aker
I’ve updated the Fedora distro for Fedora Core 2. The minimum size increased a little bit to 630MB. If you plan on using this with a 2.6 kernel, make sure to “mv /lib/tls /lib/tls-disabled” until UML fully supports NPTL. -Chris

Updated Gentoo Linux 1.4 Filesystem

Feb 27, 2004
by Christopher Aker
FS is up to date as of today (27 Feb 2004 00:12 ET). Added vi[m] and screen. The minimum image size is now 900 MB, but the FS actually has only 750 MB used with a full /usr/portage sync. I ran into the “maximum number of files” limit with the image less than 900 MB. […]

RFT: “ubd=mmap” experimental config option

Jan 11, 2004
by Christopher Aker
Request for Testing! I would appreciate it if some of you would test a new option which changes the way UML writes to your filesystem files, and post your experiences here. Normally, UML uses the standard open/close read/write library calls. The problem with this is that it duplicates data in the host’s page cache, and […]

Free Upgrade to Linode 96, help test Host4

Nov 4, 2003
by Christopher Aker
I am looking for 10 to 15 brave souls, er, existing Linode 64 customers who are currently at ThePlanet that would be willing to migrate their Linodes to Host4. At the same time, you will be upgraded to the Linode 96 plan for free — you will continue to pay the Linode 64 prices. Host4 […]
